What You Know Is Not Yours to Keep
PILLAR 19 · SERVICE
That which is not good for the beehive cannot be good for the bees.
Marcus Aurelius kept coming back to the hive. A bee does not get to be well while the hive fails. A man does not either, no matter how clean his own corner looks. We are built for each other. That is not a sentiment in his writing. It is a fact he keeps re-checking, the way you re-check a lock.
Day four of Stoic Week. Justice — the virtue that points outward — and its plainest pillar: Service. Give what you know away.
Service gets pictured as something large. Money. Missions. A foundation with your name on it. The pillar is smaller and harder than that. Sometimes it is simply taking what you know, what you have learned, or what you are good at, and making it useful to somebody else. Today. In the building you are already standing in.
The mat runs on this and everybody knows it. Jiu-jitsu does not survive a generation of men who keep what they know. Every black belt was built by upper belts who stayed after class, who showed the detail again, who rolled light with the nervous new man instead of using him for target practice. None of that was required. All of it was the culture. A gym where the experienced men hoard what they know dies in five years, and deserves to.
Off the mat it looks the same and costs the same: a few minutes, given on purpose. The call to the man who is going through what you went through three years ago — you are the only person he will believe. Showing the new hire the thing it took you a painful year to learn. Teaching your kid the skill instead of doing it for him because it is faster.
Notice the trade nobody talks about. Giving knowledge away does not deplete it. It is the one asset that grows by being handed over. The man who teaches the escape understands it better by Friday than the man who only drilled it. Service is not the tax on what you have built. It is how what you have built gets tested, kept honest, and made worth having.
The hive line cuts the other way too. If your success requires the people around you to be smaller, it is not success. It is extraction wearing a better shirt. Check the direction of your work. A good week makes the room better, not just your record in it.
Today's Action: Ask yourself what you have that could help someone else. A skill. Experience. Time. Knowledge. Find one way to give some of it away.
