PILLAR 20 · ACCOUNTABILITY

Let none find fault with others; let none see the omissions and commissions of others. But let one see one's own acts, done and undone.

That is the Buddha, saying in one sentence what Accountability takes most of us years to learn.

Accountability starts with looking in the mirror and being honest. Is this the life I want to live? Not always an easy question.

We all make our own bed with the choices we make. Where we work. How we spend our time. Who we surround ourselves with. How we take care of ourselves. What we tolerate. What we keep putting off. Not everything that happens to us is our choice — that part is real, and pretending otherwise is its own kind of lie. But over time, a lot of a life is shaped by the decisions a man makes and the habits he repeats.

At some point you have to own that. Not the whole world. Your part.

Accountability is not beating yourself up. Guilt that never turns into a change is just a hobby. The real questions are plainer: What can I change? What can I do better? What do I need to stop blaming on someone else?

Blame is comfortable because it asks nothing of you. If it is all their fault — the boss, the economy, the other guy, the bad luck — then today can look exactly like yesterday and it is not on you. The mirror is less comfortable. It is also the only place a change has ever started. If something is not working, look at yourself first. Not only at yourself. First.

This week we have looked back, done the next task, waited without fighting the clock, and kept our word. Finish it here: pick one part of your life that is not where you want it to be, name your part in it out loud, and make one change. Not a overhaul. One change. Start there.

And if you can, leave the world a little better than you found it. That is accountability too — owning what comes next, not just what already happened.

Today's Action: Look honestly at one part of your life that is not where you want it to be. Ask yourself: What part of this is mine to own? Then make one change. Start there.
