Four stories. Four virtues. One week.

FOUR IDEAS TO PONDER
Four stories worth thinking about this week. One virtue each. A running diary.
01Washington and Beijing actually made a deal.
Three days in Washington. State dinner, handshakes, all of it. They walked out with $30 billion in tariff cuts on regular stuff — toys, appliances, farm goods, medical devices. China agreed to buy American coal. New trade board. Even talks on AI. The big stuff — Taiwan, chips — still unresolved. More details Monday.

Wisdom: Wisdom is knowing when to stop swinging and start dealing. Tariffs were at 145%. Now they found $30 billion everyone can live with. You don’t have to solve everything. Solve what you can. Keep talking about the rest.
02The Iran war grinds on. They talked anyway.
War’s been going since February, when the US and Israel hit Iran. Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz. A fifth of the world’s oil moves through there. Oil’s up 70% this year. This week at the UN, Iran offered a seven-day plan to reopen the strait. Three hours of talks with US envoys. Then Trump rejected it — “not acceptable,” said Iran is “losing so badly.” But he also said he expects more talks this week. The same week brought threats to annihilate them.

Courage: Courage isn’t not being afraid. It’s moving anyway. Both sides are scared of looking weak. They sat in the room for three hours anyway. The hard conversation you’re avoiding? Have it. Courage is just fear that showed up.
03The press ban lasted six days.
The White House pulled credentials from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. Called their reporting fiction and lies. They sued the same day. A federal judge ruled the ban was probably unconstitutional and ordered them let back in, at least for 14 days. Other networks killed their pool coverage in solidarity.

Temperance: Temperance is restraint. Not reacting to everything that bothers you. You don’t have to like the coverage. But the second you start silencing people who annoy you, you’ve lost the plot. Control yourself first. That’s the whole game.
04Six to three on who gets to vote.
The Supreme Court let the administration keep using an expanded citizenship database to check voter rolls ahead of the November midterms. 65 million registrations checked in 26 states. About 28,000 flagged as possible noncitizens. But the court drew a line: no mass purges this close to the election. Individual checks only.

Justice: Justice means the rules apply the same to everyone. Doesn’t matter which side you’re on. The question is whether the process is fair. Six justices said the feds can help states check. Three said slow down. Messy. Loud. That’s the system working.
MEMENTO MORI
A reminder you wear.

Memento mori means remember you will die. Sounds dark. It really isn’t. It’s about time, and how easy it is to waste it.

THE CLOSE
Your Money Week
S&P 500 finished at 7,743 — up 1.2% on the week, sitting just under its all-time high. Nasdaq up 2.1% to 27,069. Hit a record Tuesday. Dow up 0.3% to 51,829. First winning week in a month.
The catch: the 10-year Treasury yields 5.18%. Highest since 2007. Money’s expensive. Small companies feel it first — the Russell 2000 lost ground on the week.
Oil pulled back to around $92 on hopes the Iran talks go somewhere. Still up 70% on the year. Meta ripped 13% on its AI agent news.
Stocks up, yields screaming, oil still a powder keg. I don’t bet the rent money on any of it. Neither should you.
